A hotel isn’t simply a building full of rooms to spend the night, a restaurant to dine in and a bar to enjoy drinks at. It’s a place often full of history, fun facts and quirky details that you may not even have considered. The team at Rufflets have put together some of our own for those interested in trivia.
How many beds does the housekeeping team make in a year at Rufflets?
The answer is 7560. It’s based on number of rooms, the average number of days each room is occupied throughout the year, and of course the number of beds in each room. Our room count is small compared with the First World Hotel in Pahang, Malaysia located about an hour North East of Kuala Lumpur. The hotel is made up of two multi-coloured towers with a total of 7,351 rooms which we think is currently the biggest in the world. Currently, a hotel is under construction in Saudi Arabia, called the Abraj Kudai. When opened, the hotel is expected to have an incredible 10,000 guest rooms. This would give it the number one spot on the list of the world’s largest hotels.
In the hotel laundry how many napkins are washed and ironed every month?
2500 – that’s a lot of napkins that aren’t only washed and ironed but a lot of folding for our restaurant and events team. Early napkins are believed to have originated as slices of a type of bread, used by those from ancient Greece. Ancient Chinese used paper, while ancient Romans are thought to have used cloth, that eventually became popular by the 1500s.
How many bottles of wine are consumed in a month?
Interestingly, around 950 bottles of wine are consumed in the winter months rising to 1500 in the summer months. This is attributed to drinking more alcohol when the weather gets warmer and drinking at special occasions like weddings which happen more often in the summer months.
How many scones are baked each week?
Rufflets bake fresh scones daily. Typically these are enjoyed in our Afternoon and Cream Tea menus. The kitchen team bake approximately 350 scones each week, including a special gluten-free recipe to ensure all of our guests can enjoy the same delicious home-baked scones. According to Guinness World Records, the largest scone is 141.8 kg (312 lb 51 oz) and was prepared by Neill’s Flour (UK) in Belfast, on 22 November 2017.
How many pots of teas are made each month?
Staying on the same theme, many of the pots of tea we make are to accompany our afternoon and high-tea menus in addition to serving tea with breakfast. Approximately 1500 pots of tea are made each month. We serve Tea Lovers Company Tea which is a St Andrews-established business that ethically sources its tea and re-invest profits in helping develop tea-growing communities.
How many hand-made rolls are baked each week?
500 on average – with many different flavours. Not quite as many as the ancient Greeks however who were already producing more than 80 types of bread in 2500 B.C. Also, did you know that bakers used to be fined if their loaves were underweight? They added an extra loaf to every dozen, hence the term “Baker’s Dozen.”
How many eggs does the kitchen use daily?
Surprisingly only around 8 dozen or 100 each day. All of our eggs are free range and sourced from a local supplier.
What is the best kitchen gadget?
A Thermomix – basically an intelligent food processor which lets our team weigh, chop, blend, mix, grind, grate, cook, steam, whisk, knead and so much more all within one compact machine.
How many light bulbs are replaced monthly?
It used to be in the region of 150, but since we began replacing traditional bulbs with LEDs (more efficient and use less power) we have significantly reduced this figure to just 35. Imagine a chandelier so vast that it can host three bars and a staircase. Las Vegas is home to the world’s largest chandelier, which is located at The Cosmopolitan Hotel and consists of more than 2 million crystal beads. The chandelier is 65 ft. tall and surrounds a 10,000 square foot area. Inside the chandelier, there are three bars and a partially see-through staircase. The chandelier was intended to be the main tourist attraction for The Cosmopolitan hotel when it opened in December 2010.
How many times are the gardens mowed each year?
Our gardening team have the time-consuming job of mowing our lawns at least 108 times per year. But what could be better when the sun is shining in St Andrews?
How many overseas staff members do you have?
While the hotel sector is thought to have a strong reliance on non-British workers with 30.3% of its workforce coming from EU countries and 10.8% from the rest of the world, only 4% of our team at Rufflets are not from the UK. We think it has something to do with living in one of the best places in the UK!
Who is the longest serving member of the team at Rufflets?
Heather our Head Housekeeper has completed 29 years of service at the hotel. While Heather is our longest-standing member of staff, Johnny Chung Kam-Hung worked at the Peninsula Hotel, Hong Kong for more than 56 years, beginning as a trainee bus boy at age 14.
What is one of the most unusual requests you have received?
A bride and groom wanted to arrive at the hotel on the back of an elephant (they had actually already married in Kenya).
